How To Plant Cacti In Pots Without Drainage Holes
What You’ll Need:
- A pot without drainage holes
- Cactus potting soil
- Cactus fertilizer
- Rocks or pebbles
Planting Process:
- Fill the bottom of the pot with an inch or two of rocks or pebbles. This will create a reservoir that will prevent water from sitting in the bottom of the pot and rotting your cactus.
- Cover the layer of rocks with cactus potting soil. Make sure it’s light and well-draining so that it doesn’t get waterlogged.
- Carefully remove your cactus from its existing pot, and tease out the roots before planting it into your new pot.
- Backfill around the root ball with more potting soil.
- Do not water your cactus for at least two days. This will give the plant time to settle in before you begin watering.
- Once or twice a month, give your cactus a dose of fertilizer.
- You can water your cactus every 7-10 days, depending on the size of the pot, temperature, and the overall environment.
Caring For Your Cactus:
When caring for cactus in pots without drainage holes, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
- Make sure the pot is sitting in a spot that gets plenty of indirect light.
- If the temperature drops to below 50°F, it’s important to bring your cactus indoors.
- Check the soil regularly and, if it’s wet, skip watering for a few days.
- Be sure to dispose of excess water buildup from the reservoir at the bottom of the pot.
- Finally, don’t forget to prune your cactus occasionally to keep it looking its best.
With a little care and attention, you can keep your cactus thriving for years to come in a pot without drainage holes.
