Saving Potted Hyacinth Bulbs for Next Season
Hyacinths are one of the most beautiful spring-flowering bulbs. Although they may only have one season of blooms, you don’t have to throw the bulbs away once the flowers fade. With proper care, you can save your potted hyacinths and replant them for next season. Here’s how:
Step 1: Fertilizing the Soil
Once the flowers have faded and the leaves have begun to die down, add a slow-release fertilizer to the top of the soil. This will help to nourish the bulb until it’s time to replant.
Step 2: Drying the Soil
Allow the soil in the potted hyacinth to dry out completely before you remove the bulb. This can take anywhere from 3-4 weeks, so place the pot in a spot with bright but indirect light and keep it watered but not overly saturated.
Step 3: Bulb Removal
Once the soil has completely dried out, it’s time to remove the bulb from the pot. Gently shake the root ball to loosen the soil, then carefully remove the bulb with your hands.
Step 4: Bulb Cleaning
Inspect the bulb for any damage or signs of disease. If everything looks healthy, gently brush off any remaining dirt before you place the bulb in a cool, dry spot.
Step 5: Storage
You will need to store the bulb in a cool and dry location. A paper or mesh bag is ideal for storing the bulb over the winter. Or, you can even wrap it in newspaper or paper towel and store it in a cardboard box.
Step 6: Bulb Replanting
Once the danger of frost has passed, it’s time to replant the bulb. Prepare the soil by adding a slow-release fertilizer before you replant your hyacinth bulb. Place the bulb in the soil and cover with a couple of centimeters of soil. Water and place the pot in a sunny spot.
