What is a String Pot?
A string pot, also known as a draw wire sensor or cable transducer, is an electromechanical device used to measure and monitor the linear position of an object. The device consists of a wire-wound string attached to a central body and is wrapped around a series of precision machined, longitudinal pulleys.
How Does it Work?
As the spooled string is moved through a device such as a screw, nut or linear actuator, the tension of the wire string changes due to mechanical output. This tension is then converted into an electrical signal that can be read from a display.
